PRESS RELEASE
National Supervisor Forum Welcomes Launch of National Credit Union Strategy Survey and Calls on Every Credit Union to Get Involved
The National Supervisor Forum (NSF) has welcomed the latest milestone in the development of Ireland’s first National Credit Union Strategy following the launch of the Credit Union Strategy Survey and the opening of applications for the Strategy Committee and Strategy Workshops.
The launch event was attended by Minister of State Robert Troy TD, Dr Orlaigh Quinn, Chair of the Project Governance Board, Tom Allen, Chair of the Strategy Committee, together with representatives from the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU), Credit Union Development Association (CUDA), Credit Union Managers Association (CUMA), National Supervisor Forum (NSF), Credit Union Advisory Committee (CUAC), the Central Bank of Ireland, Department of Finance, PwC, and other key stakeholders from across the credit union movement.
The publication of the Strategy Project’s Terms of Reference and Governance documents marks another significant step in delivering a sector-led strategy that will shape the future of credit unions throughout Ireland. The Department of Finance has confirmed that responses to the sector-wide survey will directly inform the themes explored during the Strategy Workshops and contribute to the development of the final Credit Union Sector Strategy.
The National Supervisor Forum is encouraging every credit union to take part in the survey and is calling on experienced individuals from across the movement to consider applying to participate in the Strategy Committee or one of the Strategy Workshops. The Forum believes that broad participation from directors, Board Oversight Committees, Supervisory Committees, CEOs, managers, staff and volunteers is essential if the strategy is to reflect the diverse experiences, opportunities and challenges facing the sector.
Speaking following the launch, NSF Chairperson John Higgins said: “This is a defining opportunity for the credit union movement. The success of the National Credit Union Strategy will depend on meaningful engagement from every part of the sector. We encourage every credit union to complete the survey and to consider becoming involved in the Strategy Committee or one of the workshops. The greater the participation, the stronger and more representative the final strategy will be.”
The NSF believes the strategy should continue to build on the unique strengths of the credit union movement, including strong governance, effective oversight, financial sustainability, digital transformation, innovation, member trust and the community ethos that has underpinned credit unions for generations.
The Forum also welcomes the collaborative approach being taken by the Department of Finance, the Project Governance Board, the Strategy Committee and all representative bodies in developing what will become the first comprehensive national strategy for the credit union sector.
Applications for the Strategy Committee and Strategy Workshops are now open, with applications closing on 24 July 2026, while the Credit Union Strategy Survey will remain open until 5 August 2026. The National Supervisor Forum encourages all affiliated credit unions to participate and ensure their voices help shape the future direction of the movement.
